Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed that his players fought
hard in the defeat against Algeria in the semifinal of the ongoing Africa Cup
of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria lost 2-1 to the Desert Foxes courtesy of
a late freekick goal from Manchester City forward, Riyad Mahrez as the North
Africans sealed a final spot against Senegal who had earlier defeated Tunisia
1-0.
Rohr said at the post match press conference: “Algeria pressed
better than us in the first half and in the midfield they had good situations
that caused us problems and their center forward cause us problems.
“We found it difficult to find our wingers like we did against
South Africa. Algeria were well organised and we could not find solution
because their pressing was very strong. After their goal, we showed good
reaction and I congratulate my players for a good fight against a very good
team. They won it in the last minute and they deserved it.
“We will continue to work because we have the youngest team in
the competition. We will learn tactically to continue to make better
communication.”
Nigeria will face Tunisia on Wednesday in the third place match while
Algeria play Senegal on Friday in the final.
