Antoine Griezmann will not replace
Philippe Coutinho at Barcelona, according to the Brazilian midfielder’s agent.
Griezmann revealed on Tuesday evening
that he would be leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the current campaign
after five years with the club.
Barcelona are set to pay the France
World Cup-winner’s £108m release clause.
But Andrea Bertolucci, Coutinho’s
representative, insists the 26-year-old will not be leaving the Nou Camp if
Griezmann is signed.
“It’s untrue that Griezmann is going
to replace Philippe at Barcelona,” Bertolucci told Spanish newspaper AS.
“I don’t know why they are saying
that. I don’t know about that and that’s why I don’t want to talk anymore, but
it’s false.”
Coutinho joined Barcelona from
Liverpool for £146m in January 2018, but has since failed to recapture his best
form for the Catalan club.
He has struggled in La Liga this
season, scoring only five times in 33 matches, and also came in for widespread
criticism for his performance in Barca’s 4-0 Champions League defeat at
Liverpool last week.
Coutinho still has four years
remaining on his contract, which includes a 400m Euros (£354.6m) buyout clause.
