It will be an all English affair in the final of the Europa League for the
first time in 42 years after Arsenal and Chelsea both advanced to
the final of the competition.
This also means
there will also be an all-English Uefa Super Cup in Istanbul on Wednesday,14
August.
Arsenal reached
the final defeating Valencia 4-2 in the second leg to advance 7-3 on aggregate at the
Mestalla stadium.
The Gunners were clinical scoring from four of their five shots on
target.
Kevin Gameiro scored twice in the east of Spain, and Alexandre Lacazette
added to his brace from the first leg, but the night belonged to Aubameyang as
he struck three times in a deadly display.The victory saw Arsenal reach their
first European final since 2006 Champions League final which they lost to
Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Chelsea sealed their place in the final by beating Eintracht
Frankfurt 4-3 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra time, with
the aggregate score 2-2.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s opener was cancelled out by Luka Jovic, but neither
side could add a decisive third goal which left the tie locked at 2-2 on
aggregate.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s early miss in the shootout gifted the advantage to
Frankfurt, but Kepa Arrizabalaga saved from Martin Hinteregger and Goncalo
Paciencia to set up a showdown with city rivals Arsenal in the final in three
weeks in Baku on 29 May.
The win was Chelsea’s first major European final since the 2013 Europa
League, when they beat Benfica 2-1 under manager Rafael Benitez.
Tournament winner will get Champions League place for next season.
