Zimbabwean FA is planning to organise an international friendly
for its national team against the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the 2019
Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The friendly
encounter, according to president of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)
Felton Kamambo will likely take place in Nigeria
“We will also go
to Nigeria where we intend to play a game in Nigeria, but that is yet to be
confirmed,” Kamambo told the Herald.
“We are still working on contractual agreements. I think we will
play three serious friendly matches that will afford the coaches a chance to
finetune their squad ahead of the tournament.”
Super Eagles
head coach Gernot Rohr revealed after draw ceremony for the 2019 AFCON in Giza
few weeks ago that his team will play two friendly games against the Black
Stars of Ghana and Terangha Lions of Senegal before the competition.
The friendly
game against Ghana which is planned for the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba looked
uncertain with a top official of the Ghana Football Association stating last
week that the Black Stars have other plans.
Benin have been
touted as a possible opponent but it seems the Zimbabweans will now be visiting
Nigeria for the warm up game.
Zimbabwe are
seeking to reach the AFCON knockout stage for the first time in Egypt.
To reach that
goal the Warriors will first have to navigate Group A, in which they face hosts
Egypt, DR Congo and Uganda.
