In-form Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze might not be
available for the Flying Eagles campaign at the forth coming FIFA U-20 World
Cup in Poland.
Chukwueze was listed by Coach Paul Aigbogun as one of the eight
prospective overseas-based professionals being considered in the 23-man squad
along with the likes of Kingsley Michael, Ash Kigbu, Tom Dele-Bashiru, Chinedu
Ekene, Henry Offia, Abubakar Jibril and Hamdi Akujobi
But sources close to the Villarreal winger has informed that the
19-year-old believes his interest would be better served with the Super Eagles
than a shot with the Flying Eagles in Poland.
“Samuel is not ready to play for the Flying Eagles in Poland,” a close
confidant of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner with the Golden Eaglets told
reporters on condition of anonymity. “The boy has been so busy for Villarreal
this season; he has also played for the Super Eagles and the Olympic Eagles and
what do they want him for in the U-20 team again?”
Words were rife that Chukwueze wanted to create history as one of few
Nigerian players to feature in all FIFA-organised tournaments by following his
attendance at the U-17 in 2015 with the U-20 in Poland but our correspondent
gathered that the lad is having none of that after all.
“Unless miracle happens, Samuel will not be in Poland with Flying Eagles
and his priority now is to make the Super Eagles’ squad for the forthcoming
African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt,” he further explained.
Incidentally, Super Eagles’ coach Gernot Rohr has not hidden his love
for the electrifying winger who he once described as one of the futures of the
national team.
“Samuel is happy playing under coach Rohr and I think he’s made up his
mind to play for the Super Eagles; he won’t be going to Poland with the Flying
Eagles,” added the impeccable source.
