German
national team coach Joachim Low has
clarified that his first choice goalkeeper remains Manuel Neuer and not Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The Bayern
Munich keeper has struggled to reach the levels of
previous years while Barcelona's
stopper seems to be going from strength to strength.
The World
Cup-winning coach acknowledges the ability of Ter Stegen but made it clear that Neuer is still no.1.
"I have not changed my opinion at all,
Neuer is my starting goalkeeper," Low stated.
"I said it in November and I repeat it, he
is our no.1 and our captain," he affirmed.
Low says there will be opportunities for the Barcelona keeper to show his ability
but reiterated that Neuer is
first choice.
"This year we will have European Championship qualifying
matches and friendlies.
"Ter Stegen plays
for a great club, is world class and I will give him chances to play.
"Obviously there will be competition in all
places but, at least in the goalkeeping position, I must say that Neuer
continues to be our starting keeper," he said to the press.
Germany face Serbia on
Wednesday in a friendly, before taking on the Netherlands on
Sunday in a 2020 European qualifier.
