Can you
imagine a Club World Cup without
the participation of European teams?
Well, that could soon become a reality in the
event that the FIFA vs UEFA war, which peaked at the FIFA Council meeting in Miami on
Friday, continues, something that seems likely due to how far apart the two sides
are.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino managed to
get his long-awaited Club World Cup plan
approved, overhauling it to a 24-team tournament, and is currently in
opposition with both UEFA and
the ECA, that
is both the European federation and clubs.
If nothing changes, the new competition would
start in 2021 but without the biggest hitters in the game today.
Next Tuesday, UEFA plan
to gather its Executive Committee, which will deal with the measures to be
adopted, but for now boycotting the competition is more than just idle
speculation.
Infantino tried to find an agreement but the meetings and talks held
in the hours prior served no purpose.
As for the Qatar World Cup and
the possibility of extending the number of teams to 48, FIFA still believe that is possible,
but the decision has been postponed until June's Congress.
The collaboration of countries in that area is
needed and is something that isn't possible at the moment due to the blockade
in the area.
In addition, FIFA approved
the use of VAR at this year's Women's
World Cup.
