Porto have officially announced that goalkeeper Iker Casillas has renewed his
contract with the club for another two years.
The Spaniard has made no secret of his desire to
retire at 40 and at the age of 37, it brings him closer to achieving that goal.
"For me, it is a special day because I feel
at home and it is obvious that goalkeepers can extend their career despite
their age and my commitment remains at 100 percent," he said.
"It isn't easy to bet on someone who is
almost 38 but I want to retire here and I'm always grateful to this club and
this city, which has always welcomed me in a wonderful way."
President Pinto Da
Costa confirmed that the nature of the deal was a one year
extension which included the option of a further season extension.
"I'm sure it won't be his last contract.
Iker has made it clear that he loves this club and this city and has never
moved for money," he said.
Casillas played his first game for the club on August 15, 2015 in a 3-0
win over Vitoria de Guimaraes.
Since then, he has played a further 148 games
and won two titles in four seasons in Portugal.
He is enjoying one of the best moments of his
outstanding career in Porto,
where he feels both loved and respected by the club and has made the decision
to hang up his gloves at the Dragao as a result.
