Not only that, it is also the second highest paying tourney after the world cup. Its format of play is almost as that of the world cup with 32 teams of four teams and divided into 8 groups. The champions league trophy have been a thing that every team wants but it is not as easy as said or seen. The monetary reward that comes with winning the champions league is like a journey that starts from ground zero, because teams are paid accumulated sums of money from qualifying for the group stage through to the final match. For instaance, in 2009/2010 season, Reaching the group stage = 3.8 million euros Participating in the group stage = 3.3 million euros (550,000 euros per match) So for qualifying and group stage football, 7.1 million euros is guaranteed. For a win in the group stage; 800,000 euros is paid. For a draw in the group stage; 400,000 euros is paid. The knockout stages which starts from round of sixteen attract monetary rewards as shown below; Playing round of sixteen = 3 million euros. Playing in the quater finals = 3.3 million euros. Playing in the semi finals = 4 million euros. Playing in the finals = 5.2 million euros. Champions league winner = 9 million euros. So a team that wins all through to the finals will recieve around 36 millions euros and a big trophy. This prize money is not inclusive of TV right. Inter Milan in 2009/2010 got 49 million euros with TV money included while Bayern got 44.8 million euros. In 2010/2011 season, Barcelona and Manchester United recieved the largestamount. While all the teams eliminated in the three qualifying rounds got 13.3 million euros. The 20 teams involved in the playoff matches recieved a fixed amount of 2.1 million euros, the result of ties notwithstanding.  Manchester united got a total of 53.197 million euros, 27 million euros for performance in the league and 25.9 million euros from TV market pool.  Barcelona got a total of 51.025 million euros, 30.7 million euros performance related and 20.3 million euros from market pool. Winning the trophy netted barca 9 million euros, while manchester united got 5.6 million euros.
